5-Day Maceió Itinerary

Five days balanced between sea, lagoon and history, with room to adjust the plan to the tide and the weather.

Updated on October 5, 2026 ✓ Information checked on October 5, 2026 adapted from the Portuguese original

Five days let you get out of rush mode. As well as the sea and the lagoon, the itinerary sets aside a day for the history of Alagoas, with Jaraguá, the Théo Brandão Museum and the town of Marechal Deodoro. As with the other itineraries, start by marking the low-tide days in the Maceió tide table.

Itinerary summary

Day Morning Afternoon Evening
1 Pajuçara pools at low tide (see the table) Ponta Verde and Jatiúca Pajuçara craft fair
2 Praia do Francês Gunga or Barra de São Miguel City waterfront
3 Pontal da Barra and the 9 islands tour Massagueira Sunset over the lagoon
4 Garça Torta Ipioca, pools at low tide (see the table) Dinner on the waterfront
5 Jaraguá and the Théo Brandão Museum Marechal Deodoro Farewell on the waterfront

Days 1 to 4

The core is the same as the 4-day itinerary: the Pajuçara pools and the city waterfront, the south coast, Mundaú Lagoon and the capital’s north coast. With an extra day, you can loosen the order: if the low tides for Pajuçara and Ipioca fall on consecutive days, put the history day between them for a break from the sun.

Day 5: Jaraguá, a museum and the first capital

Morning: Jaraguá

The Jaraguá district is Maceió’s port and historic area, with mansions and old buildings linked to the sugar trade and the port. Walk along the main streets, look at the facades and visit any cultural spaces open that day.

Then head to the Théo Brandão Museum, a museum of anthropology and folklore belonging to the Federal University of Alagoas. Its popular culture collection helps you understand the state’s folk performances, crafts and festivals. Check opening days and hours on the museum’s official channel. Other options are in Maceió museums.

Afternoon: Marechal Deodoro

Marechal Deodoro was the first capital of the Province of Alagoas until the capital moved to Maceió in 1839, according to the town’s City Hall. The center has an architectural and urban ensemble protected by Iphan, with colonial-era churches and convents. Set aside a few hours for an unhurried walk.

If you didn’t go to Massagueira on day 3, it’s in the same municipality and fits the late afternoon well.

Evening

Return to the waterfront for your last night. If you want a night out, see the options in Maceió nightlife.

How to adjust this itinerary

  • Low tide too early: on days when low tide falls very early, swap the pools for the lagoon or the south coast and try the pools on another day.
  • Rough sea: bring the history day and the lagoon forward.
  • Traveling with children: shorten day 5 and choose between the museum and Marechal Deodoro.
  • Beach lovers: replace the history day with more time at Gunga or Barra de São Miguel.

To understand what you’ll see

A little reading beforehand helps: the history of Maceió explains the role of the Jaraguá port and the move of the capital, and the Alagoas popular culture page introduces the folk performances and crafts.

What to bring on the history day

Comfortable shoes for cobbled streets, a water bottle, a hat and suitable clothing for visiting churches. Also bring a light jacket if you’ll be going into air-conditioned museums. For the trip to Marechal Deodoro, arrange transport in advance or use a rental car; the town is south of the capital, on the same route as the south coast.

Safety

At the beaches and pools, follow the guidance of lifeguards and skippers, wear a life jacket on boats, don’t step on the coral and don’t feed the fish. In town, look after your belongings as you would at any tourist destination. More advice in Maceió safety.

With one more day, the 6-day itinerary adds Paripueira or a long day trip.

Frequently asked questions

Is five days a good length for Maceió?

It's a comfortable length. You can do the main outings without rushing and still keep some slack to adjust the plan to the tide or a rainy day.

What changes compared with the 4-day itinerary?

A day devoted to history and culture is added: the Jaraguá district, the Théo Brandão Museum and Marechal Deodoro, the first capital of Alagoas, visited at a slower pace.

Are museums open every day?

Not necessarily. Opening days and hours change. Check each museum's official channel before going.

Which day should I keep free in case of rain?

The history and museums day is the easiest to keep in the rain. Use it as a reserve and swap it with a beach day if the weather turns.
