Day trip or overnight?

A day trip works when: you have four days or fewer in Maceió, want to see the Maragogi natural pools and accept a long day. Maceió agencies sell the trip with transport, and the boat to the pools is usually paid separately. Check what’s included.

Splitting your stay works when: you have five days or more, want to explore the beaches along the way at a relaxed pace or would rather not spend five hours on the road in a single day. A common split is to spend part of the trip in Maceió and part on the north coast.

Situation Suggestion
Up to 4 days Day trip on a low-tide date
5 to 7 days 1 or 2 nights on the north coast
A trip focused on rest Consider staying longer on the north coast

To fit Maragogi into your travel days, see the itineraries in Maceió itinerary.

The tide: the deciding factor

The Maragogi natural pools only appear at low tide. So the date of your day trip should be chosen by the tide table, not just by availability. Use the Maceió tide table as an initial reference and confirm boat departure times with the local operator. On days with an unfavorable tide, the trip may be canceled or rescheduled.

The Ecological Route and the way there

Between Maceió and Maragogi lies the so-called Rota Ecológica (Ecological Route), a stretch of villages and beaches that includes São Miguel dos Milagres and Porto de Pedras, plus Japaratinga farther north. Many people use this area as a base instead of Maragogi. Details on each beach, accommodation and trips in this area are in the complete Maragogi guide.

The Costa dos Corais APA

Maragogi and much of the north coast lie within the Costa dos Corais Environmental Protection Area, a federal protected area created in 1997 and managed by ICMBio. The APA has rules for visiting the reefs. Follow the guidance of the guides and the area’s management:

  • don’t step on the coral;
  • don’t feed the fish;
  • use sunscreen sparingly and choose UV-protective clothing;
  • wear a life jacket on boats.

What to bring on the day trip

A full day of road and sea calls for some preparation:

  • photo ID and some cash as well as a card;
  • sunscreen, hat, sunglasses and UV-protective clothing;
  • water shoes for walking near the reefs without getting hurt;
  • water and a light snack for the road;
  • a dry bag or pouch for your phone during the boat trip;
  • dry clothes for the return, which is usually in the late afternoon.

Leave Maceió early. The timing of the natural pools depends on the tide, and arriving late could mean missing the boat or finding the tide already rising.

What about the north coast closer to Maceió?

If your trip is short, there are natural pools and quiet beaches much closer, without going all the way to Maragogi. Compare the options in beaches of the Alagoas north coast and the Maceió tours hub. To get around, see getting around Maceió.
