The São Francisco River marks the border between Alagoas and Sergipe and makes for two classic trips from Maceió. The first is the river mouth, where the river meets the sea, visited from Piaçabuçu on the south coast. The second is the canyons of the backlands, departing from the Piranhas area. Both are long and need planning.

The São Francisco river mouth, at Piaçabuçu
Piaçabuçu is the Alagoas municipality at the river mouth. According to Visite Alagoas, it’s about 135 km south of Maceió and is known for boat trips to the mouth of the “Velho Chico” (the river’s affectionate nickname), its golden dunes and almost deserted beaches. Sunset over the dunes is one of the highlights.
What the trip is usually like
- Leave Maceió early in the morning on the AL-101 Sul.
- Board a boat in Piaçabuçu to go down the river to where it meets the sea.
- Stop to walk on the dunes and swim in an area indicated by the skipper.
- Return to Maceió in the late afternoon.
Maceió agencies sell the trip with transport. If you drive, you book the boat in Piaçabuçu. Duration, stops and price vary by operator. There’s no official price list; confirm before paying.
The area also has buggy and quad bike trips along beaches, dunes and fishing villages, and Pontal do Peba beach, mentioned by Visite Alagoas for walks and swimming.
Penedo on the way
Penedo is a historic town on the banks of the São Francisco, about 144 km from Maceió according to Visite Alagoas. The portal highlights its colonial center, more than 20 historic churches and the Theatro Sete de Setembro, opened in 1884. Many itineraries include Penedo as a stop before or after the river mouth. Church and museum hours vary; check locally.
The Xingó canyons, from Piranhas
Piranhas is in the Alagoas backlands, on the banks of the São Francisco. According to Visite Alagoas, it’s about 290 km from Maceió, around 3 and a half hours of travel, via Arapiraca on the AL-220. The historic center of Piranhas was recognized as heritage by Iphan in 2004, again according to the portal.
The main reason for the trip is the boat rides through the São Francisco River canyons, in the area of the Xingó hydroelectric plant, between Piranhas and Canindé de São Francisco, already in Sergipe. The area also has the Rota do Cangaço (Cangaço Route), linked to the story of the bandit leader Lampião, the Mirante Secular lookout over the river and the Clock Tower in the historic center.
Day trip or overnight?
It’s about seven hours of driving there and back, plus the time on the trip itself. Day trips exist and are sold by agencies, but the day is very long. Spending a night in Piranhas lets you see the historic center at a relaxed pace, take the boat trip without rushing and enjoy the late afternoon by the river.
How to organize it
| If you have | Suggestion |
|---|---|
| Up to 4 days in Maceió | Choose one long trip, ideally the river mouth, which is closer |
| 5 to 7 days | River mouth one day; canyons with an overnight stay, if your trip allows |
| Interest in history | Include Penedo and the center of Piranhas |
To compare with shorter outings, see the Maceió tours hub. If you’re continuing along the south coast to Piaçabuçu, you can first explore the beaches of the Alagoas south coast. Ready-made itineraries are in Maceió itinerary, and transport options in getting around Maceió.
