According to INMET climate normals, there’s less rain from September to March. December, January, Carnival and July are the busiest periods. September, October, November and March usually balance dry weather with fewer crowds. See it month by month in when to visit Maceió.
2. Does it rain a lot in Maceió?
Between April and August, yes. June is the wettest month, averaging about 323 mm in INMET’s 1991–2020 normal. Rain usually comes in showers, with sunny spells in between.
3. Is the sea warm?
The water is pleasant all year round, typical of the Northeastern coast. In the rainy season, it may be less clear.
Planning
4. How many days should I spend in Maceió?
With three or four days you see the waterfront, the natural pools and a beach on the south or north coast. With five to seven days, you add the lagoon, Marechal Deodoro and more beaches. Compare the options in the Maceió itineraries.
5. Where is the airport?
Maceió Zumbi dos Palmares International Airport (MCZ) is in Rio Largo. According to AENA, it’s about 22 km from central Maceió.
6. How much does a trip to Maceió cost?
It depends on the season, where you’re coming from and your travel style. We don’t publish a fixed figure because there’s no official source for it. The trip costs guide explains what weighs most and gives the official taxi fare.
7. Do I need to rent a car?
To stay on the waterfront, no. For several beaches outside the capital, a car helps. Organized tours are the alternative if you don’t want to drive.
Beaches and outings
8. What are the Pajuçara natural pools?
They’re areas of shallow, calm water that form over the reefs, offshore from the beach, when the tide is low. Access is by jangada. See the Pajuçara natural pools page.
9. How do I find out the tide times?
Use the Maceió tide table, based on the official forecasts for the port of Maceió. Schedule reef trips for the lowest tide of the day.
10. Which are the city’s best-known beaches?
On the city waterfront: Pajuçara, Ponta Verde, Jatiúca and Cruz das Almas. Outside the capital: Praia do Francês, Barra de São Miguel and Gunga to the south; Garça Torta, Ipioca and Paripueira to the north.
Safety
11. Is Maceió safe for tourists?
The tourist areas of the waterfront are busy during the day and early evening. Take basic precautions: don’t show off valuables, avoid empty streets at night and use a taxi or ride-hailing app for longer trips. Read the Maceió safety guide.
12. Is a life jacket mandatory on the jangada?
Yes. The rules of the Alagoas Harbor Master’s Office require life jackets for passengers on jangadas and transport canoes.
13. Does the sinking of neighborhoods affect the tourist area?
The neighborhoods affected by subsidence linked to rock salt extraction (Pinheiro, Mutange, Bebedouro, Bom Parto and part of Farol) are near Mundaú Lagoon. They’re not on the tourist ocean waterfront. Details and sources in the safety guide.
Culture and food
14. What should I eat in Maceió?
Sururu, maçunim (a small clam), tapioca, fish and shrimp with coconut milk, and sweets such as cocada are among the local flavors. Sururu is registered as intangible heritage of Alagoas. See typical food of Alagoas.
15. Which holidays fill up the city?
Besides national holidays, Maceió City Hall’s official 2026 calendar includes São João (June 24), Alagoas Political Emancipation Day (September 16) and municipal holidays such as Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres (August 27). Long holiday weekends fill the waterfront and push up accommodation prices.
