Maceió is warm all year round, so the right question isn’t “when is it sunny” but “when does it rain less and when is the city packed”. Both factors change prices, traffic and your chances of finding the natural pools with a calm sea.
Maceió’s climate in brief
The climate is hot and humid tropical. Temperatures vary little through the year. What changes a lot is the rain: it’s concentrated in autumn and winter, between April and August. From September to March the weather is drier and sunnier.
Rainfall month by month
The table below uses average rainfall from INMET’s 1991–2020 climate normal for Maceió. The January and May figures appear in the monthly summaries published by INMET itself; the others come from the climate table that reproduces the institute’s data.
| Month | Average rainfall (mm) | In practice |
|---|---|---|
| January | 91.2 | Dry and hot, high season |
| February | 80.2 | Dry, Carnival livens up the city |
| March | 101.3 | Still dry, fewer crowds |
| April | 194.3 | Heavy rains begin |
| May | 294.7 | Very rainy |
| June | 322.8 | Wettest month of the year |
| July | 270.9 | Rainy, school vacations |
| August | 191.5 | Rain easing off |
| September | 109.2 | Transition to the dry season |
| October | 70.2 | Dry |
| November | 45.1 | Dry |
| December | 36.7 | The driest, packed at year-end |
Temperature through the year
According to INMET normals reproduced in the city’s climate table, average highs are around 31 °C from December to March and drop to about 28 °C in June, July and August. Average lows vary little, from about 20 °C in winter to about 22 °C in summer. The sea is pleasant all year round.
Rainy season: April to August
INMET data confirm that the rainy season runs from April to August, peaking between May and July. In these months:
- rain usually falls in showers, sometimes heavy, with sunny spells;
- the sea can be rougher and the water in the natural pools less clear;
- boat and jangada trips may be canceled due to sea conditions;
- it’s good to have indoor alternatives, like those in Maceió on a rainy day.
If you don’t mind a few hours of rain, it’s a quieter period outside July.
Dry season: September to March
From September to March it rains much less. It’s the most popular time for the beach and the natural pools. Combine a dry month with low tide: open the Maceió tide table to see when the Pajuçara natural pools are accessible.
High season and holidays
The city fills up at three main times:
- December and January: summer vacations, Christmas and New Year. Higher prices and early bookings.
- Carnival: in 2026, Maceió City Hall declared an optional day off from February 16 to 18.
- July: school vacations, even with the rain.
Long holiday weekends also fill the waterfront. Maceió City Hall’s official 2026 calendar (Decree No. 10,234) includes, besides national holidays:
| Date | Holiday | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| April 3 | Good Friday | municipal |
| June 4 | Corpus Christi | municipal |
| June 24 | São João | state |
| June 29 | Marechal Floriano Peixoto | municipal |
| August 27 | Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres | municipal |
| September 16 | Alagoas Political Emancipation | state |
| November 20 | Zumbi dos Palmares | state and national |
| November 30 | State Evangelical Day | state |
| December 8 | Nossa Senhora da Conceição | municipal |
June has São João, one of the biggest festivals in the Northeast. Even in the rainy season, the city gets busy.
Best time for each kind of traveler
| Traveler | Best period | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Beach and natural pools | September to March | Less rain, often a calmer sea |
| Budget | March, April, August and September | Outside vacations, moderate rain |
| Families with children | January or July | Matches school vacations, but crowded |
| June festivals | June | São João, despite the rain |
