4-Day Maceió Itinerary

Four days to combine the city waterfront, the south coast, the lagoon and the capital's north coast, always keeping an eye on the tide.

Updated on October 5, 2026 ✓ Information checked on October 5, 2026 adapted from the Portuguese original

With four days, the classic Maceió itinerary gains a day for the capital’s north coast. The order of the days should come from the Maceió tide table: there are two outings that depend on low tide (Pajuçara and Ipioca), and ideally each should fall on a day with low tide during daylight.

Itinerary summary

Day Morning Afternoon Evening
1 Pajuçara pools at low tide (see the table) Ponta Verde and Jatiúca Pajuçara craft fair
2 Praia do Francês Gunga or Barra de São Miguel City waterfront
3 Pontal da Barra and the 9 islands tour Massagueira Sunset over the lagoon
4 Cruz das Almas and Garça Torta Ipioca, pools at low tide (see the table) Dinner on the waterfront

Days 1 to 3: the core of the itinerary

The first three days follow the logic of the 3-day itinerary:

  • Day 1: jangada to the Pajuçara natural pools, afternoon on the city beaches and the craft fair in the evening.
  • Day 2: the south coast, with Praia do Francês and Gunga or Barra de São Miguel.
  • Day 3: Mundaú Lagoon, with Pontal da Barra, the 9 islands tour and Massagueira.

If low tide doesn’t cooperate, swap the order. The south coast and the lagoon work on any day.

Day 4: the capital’s north coast

Morning: Cruz das Almas and Garça Torta

Heading north from the city waterfront, Cruz das Almas Beach is the first stop. Farther on, Garça Torta Beach keeps the feel of a fishing village, with coconut palms and fewer people than the city waterfront. It’s a good place for an unhurried break.

Afternoon: Ipioca and the natural pools

Ipioca Beach is the best known on the capital’s north side. On the reefs offshore are the Tatu and Português natural pools, inside the Costa dos Corais APA. Maceió City Hall regulated these trips in 2022: only jangadas may enter the Tatu pool, with a daily limit, and there’s a limit on speedboats and catamarans at the Português pool. Enforcement is municipal, with support from bodies such as ICMBio and the Harbor Master’s Office.

Because of the boat limit, ask about availability in advance and go at low tide (see the table).

Late afternoon

Head back to the city waterfront or stay for the sunset in the north. If you still have energy, the beaches farther north and Paripueira are described in beaches of the Alagoas north coast.

How to organize transport

  • City waterfront: on foot, by bike or by ride-hailing app.
  • South and north coasts: rental car, a tour with transport included or a ride-hailing app.
  • Lagoon: Pontal da Barra is within the capital; Massagueira is in the neighboring municipality of Marechal Deodoro.

Adjustments for different travelers

  • Couples: save the lagoon sunset for day 3 and a waterfront dinner for day 4. More ideas in Maceió for couples.
  • Families: choose calm-water stretches and short trips. The pools call for extra care with children.
  • Rainy day: swap day 4 for Jaraguá, museums and shopping.

Checklist before each day

  1. Check the day’s low tide in the table.
  2. Look at the weather forecast and sea conditions.
  3. Confirm departure and return times for booked trips.
  4. Pack sunscreen, water, water shoes and a dry bag.
  5. Leave spare documents and valuables at your accommodation.

Safety in the sea

On open-sea beaches, watch the flags and whether lifeguards are present. Don’t swim alone or after drinking. Stay hydrated and use sunscreen throughout the day, cloudy days included.

Frequently asked questions

What does the fourth day add to the itinerary?

The north coast of the capital itself: Garça Torta, with a fishing village and calmer sea, and Ipioca, home to the Tatu and Português natural pools.

Do the Ipioca pools also depend on the tide?

Yes. Like those at Pajuçara, they're only worthwhile at low tide. If both trips are in your plan, put each one on a day with low tide in daylight.

Are there rules for trips at Ipioca?

Yes. Maceió City Hall regulated trips to the Tatu and Português pools, with a limit on boats per day. The area is in the Costa dos Corais APA, managed by ICMBio.

Do I need a car for the north coast?

It helps, because the beaches are spread along the highway. Other options are booking the trip with transport or using a ride-hailing app.
