Ipioca is Maceió’s northernmost neighborhood. Here the capital is already inside the Costa dos Corais Environmental Protection Area (APA), the federal protected area created in 1997 that protects the coast between northern Alagoas and southern Pernambuco. The result is a stretch of coast less densely built-up than the city waterfront, with coconut groves and the mouths of rivers reaching the sea.
Ipioca in the Costa dos Corais APA
The APA’s Public Use Plan, published by ICMBio in 2021, lists Ipioca Beach, Sauaçuí Beach and the Meirim River in Maceió (Ipioca) among the area’s attractions. The plan classifies Ipioca’s beaches as rural in character, very different from the urbanized beaches of the waterfront.
The same document listed Ipioca among places with natural pools still to be regulated and organized by the APA. That’s why this guide doesn’t recommend trips to the Ipioca pools. If you want an organized natural pool trip on the north coast, the reference is Paripueira, just past the city limits.
Rivers and river mouths
Ipioca is crossed by rivers that reach the sea, such as the Sauaçuí and the Meirim. In January 2026, technicians from Iplam, Maceió City Hall’s planning agency, visited the river mouths of the north coast to assess erosion and beach access conditions, as part of the waterfront’s Integrated Management Plan.
A river mouth changes with the tide and the rain. At low tide, sandbanks appear; at high tide and after heavy rain, the current can become dangerous.
Works and access
In March 2025, Maceió City Hall announced drainage, sanitation and paving works in Ipioca, Riacho Doce, Garça Torta and Guaxuma, with work fronts from Sauaçuí beach to Garça Torta. Access to the neighborhood is via the AL-101 Norte. A car or ride-hailing app makes the visit easier.
How to make the most of the day
| Time | Suggestion |
|---|---|
| Morning | Ipioca or Sauaçuí beach at low tide |
| Midday | Lunch on the north coast |
| Afternoon | A stop at the Mermaid, in Riacho Doce, on the way back |
On the way back to the city waterfront, you can stop at Garça Torta and Riacho Doce. Use the tide table to choose the day and see the guide to the beaches of the Alagoas north coast to plan the full outing.
If you’d like to stay outside the city waterfront, you can compare Ipioca with other areas in the where to stay in Maceió guide.
Practical tips
- Check the tide table: the tide changes access to stretches of beach and the river mouths.
- Don't step on reefs and don't take anything from the environment; the area is a protected area.
- Bring water and sunscreen; facilities are spread out.
- Avoid swimming at the river mouths after heavy rain.
