Praia do Francês is the main postcard image of the Alagoas south coast. It’s in the municipality of Marechal Deodoro, next to Maceió, and is one of the most popular day trips for people staying on the capital’s waterfront. The Visite Alagoas portal describes the beach as a stretch of water sheltered by coral reefs, lively both by day and at night.
Where it is and how to get there
The beach is on the south coast, on the way from Maceió to Barra de São Miguel. Access is via the AL-101 Sul highway, the same road that leads to Gunga. According to Visite Alagoas, Marechal Deodoro is about 28 km from central Maceió. Travel time varies with traffic leaving the capital, especially at weekends and in high season.
There are several ways to get there:
- Own or rented car: gives you the freedom to combine the beach with the historic center of Marechal Deodoro and Massagueira.
- Ride-hailing app or taxi: handy if you don’t want to drive; arrange the late-afternoon return in advance.
- Intercity bus: there’s a service between Maceió and Marechal Deodoro. Check routes and times on the company’s or transport authority’s official channel before setting out.
- Agency tour: many Maceió agencies sell the south coast tour. See more options in Maceió tours.
The two sides of the beach
Praia do Francês is usually described as two stretches with different characters.
| Stretch | What the sea is like | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Reef side | Calmer water, sheltered by the coral barrier, especially at low tide | Families, relaxed swimming, watching marine life |
| Open side | Sea with waves, without the same reef protection | Surfers and those experienced in the sea |
This division is a general guide. Conditions vary with the tide, wind and time of year. Before going into the water, watch the flags and ask the lifeguards, if there’s a post on the beach.
Tides and natural pools
At low tide, the reefs form pools and shallow basins where you can watch fish. This is also when the water on the sheltered side is usually clearest. So it’s worth planning the day with the Maceió tide table, which serves as a reference for the whole nearby coast.
A few precautions help preserve the environment:
- don’t step on or remove coral, shells or animals;
- don’t feed the fish, as it changes their behavior and health;
- use sunscreen and avoid strong sun from late morning to mid-afternoon;
- take your litter back with you.
Things to do at Praia do Francês
As well as swimming, the beach offers plenty of activities. Among the most common are boat trips to the reefs, snorkeling in the natural pools, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding on the calm stretch, and surfing on the open side. Prices and availability vary with the season and the operator; confirm everything before booking and insist on life jackets on boats.
The waterfront has beach shacks and shops, and there are accommodation options in the village. If you prefer to stay by the sea outside the capital, the village is an alternative to Maceió’s city waterfront. Compare the areas in the where to stay in Maceió guide.
A little history
The beach’s name dates from colonial times. According to Marechal Deodoro City Hall, it recalls the period when French traders illegally dealt in brazilwood with the Caeté Indigenous people. Today the beach belongs to the same municipality that was the first capital of Alagoas and has a historic center protected by Iphan.
Fitting it into your itinerary
The simplest combination is to spend the morning on the beach, making the most of low tide, and head in the late afternoon to central Marechal Deodoro or Massagueira, on the shore of Manguaba Lagoon. If you have more time, devote another day to Barra de São Miguel and Gunga. The guide to the beaches of the Alagoas south coast compares the options.
