Garça Torta is a beach neighborhood on Maceió’s north coast, between Guaxuma and Riacho Doce. Coming from the city waterfront, the change is obvious: fewer buildings, more coconut palms and houses, a slower pace. It’s a good choice for a beach day without the bustle of Pajuçara and Ponta Verde, without leaving the city.

Maceió’s north coast

In City Hall’s coastal planning, the stretch between Jacarecica and Ipioca forms its own unit, with a different pattern of occupation from the city waterfront and environmental preservation features. Garça Torta is in this stretch, along with Guaxuma, Riacho Doce and Ipioca.

The area is undergoing works. In March 2025, City Hall announced investments of about R$ 134 million in drainage, sanitation and paving in the Ipioca, Riacho Doce, Garça Torta and Guaxuma neighborhoods, expected to be completed at the end of 2025. Some streets may be under works or newly paved when you visit.

What the beach is like

Garça Torta has a strip of sand with coconut palms and a beach-village feel. As along much of the Alagoas coast, the tide changes the look a lot: the width of the sand and the depth near the shore vary through the day. Check the Maceió tide table to choose your time.

The Mermaid, in Riacho Doce

Just to the north, in Riacho Doce, stands the Mermaid statue, set on the reefs. According to Maceió City Hall, the sculpture is the work of artist José Corbiniano Lins, is about 4 meters tall and was unveiled on March 22, 1964. In 2022, City Hall restored the statue’s tail, damaged by the sea. It’s a common stop for people heading to the north coast.

How to combine it with other beaches

Stop What to expect
Garça Torta Neighborhood beach, with coconut palms and a calm pace
Riacho Doce The Mermaid statue on the reefs
Ipioca Less densely built-up beach, inside the Costa dos Corais APA
Paripueira Natural pools of the Costa dos Corais APA, in another municipality

A full-day outing can start at Garça Torta and continue north. See suggestions in the guide to the beaches of the Alagoas north coast.

Who it’s for

Garça Torta suits those who want to swap the busy promenade for a neighborhood beach while staying in Maceió. It works well as a rest day between longer outings, or as the first stop on a trip along the north coast. If you don’t want to depend on a car, the city waterfront is still more practical.

Practical tips

  • Transport: a car or ride-hailing app gives more flexibility. For buses, check routes on City Hall’s official channel.
  • Facilities: there are beach services, but fewer than on the city waterfront. Bring water and sunscreen.
  • Timing: the return in the late afternoon may hit traffic leaving the city waterfront.

To compare with the city’s other beaches, read the Maceió beaches guide.

Practical tips

  • Go at low tide to make the most of the strip of sand.
  • Combine it with the Mermaid, in Riacho Doce, on the same outing.
  • Bring water and sunscreen; facilities are simpler than on the city waterfront.
  • Respect the flags and lifeguards' instructions, where there are any.
