2-Day Maceió Itinerary
Two well-spent days: one for the Pajuçara pools and the city waterfront, the other for a south coast beach.
Updated on October 5, 2026 ✓ Information checked on October 5, 2026 adapted from the Portuguese original
Two days in Maceió call for focus. The plan here is simple: one day on the city waterfront, with the Pajuçara natural pools, and one day on the south coast. First of all, check the Maceió tide table. The day with low tide in daylight should be your pool day.
Itinerary summary
| Day | Morning | Afternoon | Evening |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Jangada to the Pajuçara pools at low tide (see the table) | Ponta Verde and Jatiúca beaches | Waterfront stroll and craft fair |
| 2 | Praia do Francês | Gunga beach or Barra de São Miguel | Dinner on the city waterfront |
Day 1: Pajuçara pools and the city waterfront
Morning: natural pools
The jangadas leave from the sand at Pajuçara Beach. The boarding stretch for tourist jangadas is set by a Maceió City Hall ordinance that organizes use of the beach. Arrange your departure to reach the Pajuçara natural pools at low tide (see the table). The lower the tide, the more reef is exposed and the clearer the water.
- Carry cash and documents in a dry bag.
- Use sunscreen and protective clothing, as there’s no shade on the reef.
- Don’t step on the coral and don’t feed the fish. The area is part of the Costa dos Corais APA, a federal protected area.
- Ask for a life jacket if you’ll stay on the jangada and follow the jangada operator’s instructions.
Afternoon: Ponta Verde and Jatiúca
After lunch, follow the waterfront to Ponta Verde Beach and Jatiúca Beach. The beaches follow one another and the promenade lets you walk, cycle or stop at kiosks.
Evening: craft fair and waterfront
The Pajuçara craft fair is a good stop to discover Alagoas crafts, such as filé lace, straw and wood pieces. The illuminated waterfront has plenty of bars and restaurants. Ideas on the where to eat in Maceió page.
Day 2: the south coast
Morning: Praia do Francês
Praia do Francês is in the municipality of Marechal Deodoro, south of the capital. It has a stretch sheltered by reefs, with calmer water, and an open-sea stretch popular with surfers. Respect the flags and the lifeguards’ instructions.
Afternoon: Gunga or Barra de São Miguel
Choose between Gunga Beach, with coconut groves and cliffs where the lagoon meets the sea, and Barra de São Miguel Beach, with sea sheltered by reefs. Buggy and boat trips linking these beaches are sold locally and by agencies. Check what’s included and whether the operator is registered.
Variations
- Low tide only on the second day: reverse the order. Do the south coast on day 1.
- No low tide in daylight: swap the pools for Mundaú Lagoon and the 9 islands tour, which doesn’t depend on the sea tide.
- Rain: the historic Jaraguá district and the museums hold up well. See Maceió on a rainy day.
What to pack in your daypack
- Sunscreen, hat and sunglasses.
- Water shoes, useful on the reef and on rocks.
- A reusable water bottle.
- A dry bag for your phone, card and ID.
- Light long-sleeved clothing for sun protection on the jangada.
- Some cash for beach shacks and small vendors.
With only two days, avoid fixed commitments in the late afternoon of day 2 if your flight is in the evening. South coast trips depend on traffic and the return time agreed with the operator.
Where to stay for this itinerary
For a weekend, the Pajuçara, Ponta Verde or Jatiúca waterfront cuts down on travel: you can walk to the jangada boarding point and most services are nearby. Compare neighborhoods in where to stay in Maceió.
If you have one more day, move on to the 3-day itinerary, which adds the lagoon and Pontal da Barra.

Frequently asked questions
Can I see Maceió in 2 days?
You can see the essentials: the Pajuçara natural pools, the city waterfront and a south coast beach. The lagoon, the north coast and the historic center will have to wait for another trip or a longer itinerary.
What if low tide doesn't fall on my two days?
Swap the days, or replace the pools with the south coast and Mundaú Lagoon, which depend less on the tide. Check the tide table before booking any trip.
Is it better to go to Francês or Gunga on the second day?
Francês is on the way and is a beach with facilities, good for walking. Gunga is sought after for its coconut groves and cliffs. Many tours combine both on the same day.
Do I need to rent a car for this itinerary?
It's not essential. The first day takes place entirely on the city waterfront. For the south coast, you can book a tour with transport or drive.
