Bars and Restaurants in Maceió: How to Choose
Where the main bar and restaurant areas are, what to try and what to check on the bill.
Updated on October 5, 2026 ✓ Information checked on October 5, 2026 adapted from the Portuguese original
Eating well is part of a trip to Maceió: fish and seafood, sururu (a small mussel) from the lagoon, tapioca, cuscuz (steamed corn cake) and backlands cooking appear on menus at every price point. This page helps you choose safely. The places listed below the text appear only when there’s a verifiable public source.
Where the main areas are
- Urban waterfront (Pajuçara, Ponta Verde and Jatiúca): kiosks on the sand, seafood restaurants and bars that get busy at night.
- The lagoon area: Pontal da Barra, on the shore of Mundaú Lagoon, and Massagueira, in Marechal Deodoro, are known for dishes with fish and shellfish from the lagoon.
- Beaches outside the capital: beach shacks and restaurants serve those spending the day on the southern or northern coast.
For suggestions by area and type of cuisine, read where to eat in Maceió. To get to know the dishes, see typical Alagoas food.
What to check before ordering
- Ask for a menu with prices. At beach shacks and kiosks, confirm the price before ordering, especially dishes sold “by the kilo” or “catch of the day”.
- Ask about portion size. Many dishes serve two or more people.
- Check the bill. Verify items, quantities and the service charge.
- Ask for a receipt. It helps with any complaint.
Hygiene and health
Notice how clean the place is, how raw food is kept and where the seafood comes from. On very hot days, choose freshly prepared dishes. Stay hydrated, especially if you’re drinking alcohol in the sun.
Dietary restrictions
If you have an allergy or intolerance, say so before ordering and ask about ingredients and how dishes are prepared. Seafood, peanuts, cashews and other nuts, coconut milk and gluten appear in many regional dishes. At beach shacks, the kitchen is usually shared, which increases the risk of cross-contamination. For young children, choose simple dishes and confirm where the seafood comes from.
Street vendors on the beach
On the waterfront and the beaches outside the capital, vendors sell snacks, drinks and fruit. Ask the price first, check how the food is kept and prefer packaged products or ones prepared in front of you. Glass containers on the sand are dangerous: prefer cans or disposable cups and take your trash with you.
Accessibility
Not every kiosk and restaurant on the waterfront has step-free access or an accessible restroom. If you need it, ask before you go or check the place’s official website.
Cadastur for bars and restaurants
For bars, restaurants and cafés, Cadastur registration is optional. When a place is registered, that information helps our guide’s check, but it isn’t required to be listed. What we require is a verifiable public source, such as the official website.
Nightlife
For bars with music, cultural programs and places open late, see Maceió nightlife.
Problems with the bill
Try to resolve it on the spot, calmly and in writing if possible. If you can’t agree, contact the Procon (consumer protection agency) in your state or consumidor.gov.br.

List my businessFrequently asked questions
Do restaurants need Cadastur registration?
It's not mandatory. For restaurants, bars and cafés, Cadastur is optional. When a place is registered, it's one more detail to check.
Is the service charge mandatory?
The 10% tip is suggested, not mandatory. It must be shown on the bill, and you can ask for it to be removed if you don't want to pay it.
Where can I eat seafood near Maceió?
The urban waterfront and the lagoon area, including Massagueira, have many seafood restaurants. See tips on dishes and areas on the where-to-eat page.
Why doesn't the guide name restaurants in its articles?
It's an editorial rule. Businesses only appear in the listing below when there's a verifiable public source, with no ranking and no recommendation.
